SHA Wellness Clinic Mexico review: is it worth $1,745 a night?

I checked in on Monday, September 28, 2026 and checked out on Saturday, October 3: five nights at SHA Wellness Clinic Mexico, on a quiet stretch of coast at Costa Mujeres, across the water from Cancún and right next door to the St. Regis Costa Mujeres, where I also stayed (read my St. Regis review). I’ve always been into health and, more recently, longevity, so I wanted to treat myself and try something truly different. The trip was not sponsored.

Getting there and checking in

SHA is about an hour from Cancún airport, and far from the hotel zone. The airport itself is hectic: the Wi-Fi is spotty, people press you for taxis, and it feels too small for the crowds. But as soon as you’re in SHA’s luxury SUV (transfers are included), you feel the experience start. Calm music plays, and two small screens in front of your seat introduce the hotel, including its focus on sustainability and food that’s 99% organic.

You arrive at an open-air lobby where you can hear the waves, and the friendly staff greet you with a healthy welcome drink. On the welcome tour, the staff proudly explain that, seen from above, the buildings are designed to look like a human gene.

The first thing you notice is the mood. The entrance is stark and understated, there’s barely any music, and the whole place feels peaceful, calm, and quiet. It’s not a lively resort. It feels serious in a good way, like everyone is there for the same reason.

Official check-in is 3 p.m. and check-out is noon, but both are very flexible, which I really appreciated. I arrived around noon. I’d booked a standard king room, but they upgraded me to an Oceanfront Deluxe Room: slightly bigger, with a shower that faces the ocean, a soaking tub, and a larger walk-in closet.

The room: 6.5 out of 10

It’s a nice room. The balcony has more than just chairs: there’s a small sofa out there too. Inside you get another sofa, a TV, a huge walk-in closet, and a comfortable bed. The shower is simple and easy to use, and you can look straight out at the ocean while you’re in it. The tub, which came with the upgrade, has the same view, and the bathroom has a bidet.

At night, all you hear is the sound of waves in the distance. The whole hotel is quiet.

Honestly, it’s a fairly standard luxury room, just a calm one. It doesn’t feel especially Mexican, and it doesn’t do much to reflect the health side of the place. There’s no coffee in the hotel, though they offer other caffeinated options. I don’t drink coffee, so it didn’t bother me, but coffee lovers will notice. In the room you get special teas for detox, digestion, and balance, plus two large bottles of filtered water.

The hotel experience

SHA is a wellness clinic and resort that started in Spain in 2008, opened here in Mexico more recently, and has a location planned in the UAE.

Here’s how a stay at SHA works. Every guest books a program, and each day is filled with therapies you choose yourself, plus consultations and set meal times. When you arrive, you download the SHA app. It holds your daily schedule, your nutrition plan, and your test results, so you always know where you need to be next.

A typical day in the SHA app, packed from morning to dinner

Your first appointment is a consultation where the doctor runs a whole battery of tests:

  • Cognition: working memory and processing speed
  • Stress: a device that reads how activated your nervous system is (sympathetic versus parasympathetic)
  • Fitness: grip strength, balance, body fat percentage, posture and muscle imbalances, and areas of localized tension
  • Heart health: a pulse-wave reading of the condition of your arteries
  • The basics: vitals and a general health exam

After the consultation there’s also a neurofeedback session. They hook you up to a device that reads your brain waves to measure how naturally relaxed and meditative you are.

They build your plan from those results. Stay Your Way gives you two treatments a day: one from an “Essential” list and one from an “Advanced” list, each split into categories like stress reset, movement, biohacking, body shape, and detox. Over my stay that added up to 10, but you can add more for an extra cost. The essential ones are things like breathing techniques, personal training, and mindfulness. The advanced ones include cell regeneration therapy, which the clinic says uses ozone to boost mitochondrial function, and specialized massages. You also meet with a psychologist, a registered nutritionist, and doctors who specialize in different areas.

Beyond Stay Your Way, SHA offers themed packages and add-ons, each bundling a set of therapies: weight loss, fitness, sleep, and beauty, among others. Your stay looks different depending on which one you pick.

My favorite treatments

My favorite was the cranio-cervical therapy, a massage that focuses on the head, neck, and shoulders. It was amazing, and I’d go back for it alone.

The most memorable was the hydroenergetic detox treatment. You get into a very modern-looking tub that massages you with jets of water while it changes color. They dim the lights, you get very hot, and then they cover you in a seaweed treatment and wrap you up. It’s meant to help you detoxify.

The schedule is flexible too. If you have to miss an appointment, they’re understanding and simply move it. If you’d rather have treatments early in the morning or in the evening, they’ll arrange that.

My sleep package

I chose the Sleep Well Pack because I wanted to improve my sleep. It was alright, and I learned a few things. It included:

  • A consultation with a sleep doctor
  • A sleep optimization session with a doctor
  • A “Mental Balance Serum” IV drip, which the clinic says is designed to support serotonin and dopamine
  • An overnight sleep test using a small, non-invasive device on your finger that measures your brain waves and how much deep sleep you get
  • A follow-up session with the doctor to go over the results and build a plan to improve my deep sleep

Going forward, I wouldn’t add extra packages. Honestly, though, as most people already know, most of good sleep is just going to bed at a consistent, early time and in a relaxed state. The standard Stay Your Way program is plenty.

The food: 9 out of 10

The food was easily my favorite part of the stay. I met the chef, who talked me through how the menu draws on Mexican and Japanese cooking, with lots of vegetables. Breakfast always includes a different miso soup, often with vegetables and mushrooms. People assume healthy food can’t be very good, but this was both: gourmet plates with new flavors every day.

It’s also highly personalized. After a meeting with the nutritionist, they adjusted every meal to what I asked for, extra protein and no shellfish, at no extra cost.

Meal times are set: breakfast 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., lunch 1 to 3:30 p.m., and dinner 7 to 8:30 p.m. For a health-focused place, I’d expect an earlier dinner option, since eating earlier is generally better for sleep and digestion. They even sell a cookbook of their recipes, which I’m tempted to buy.

One of my favorite moments was dinner on World Heart Day. They handed out an optional card with a few reflective questions: what you’d like to forgive, what you need to let go of, and what you’d like to let into your heart. Soft live music played as I looked out over the ocean, then dessert arrived: a raspberry and chocolate mousse shaped like hearts. It was a small thing, but really thoughtful.

What keeps it from a 10: no coffee (though there are other caffeinated options), no dairy, no red meat, and no drinks during meals, only before and after. I don’t drink coffee and rarely eat dairy or red meat (aside from loving hotpot and Korean BBQ), so it didn’t bother me. But if you’re trying to bulk up, this probably isn’t the place. There’s also a 4 p.m. tea time, with teas for things like digestion and lowering cholesterol.

Service: 8 out of 10

The staff are very good and experienced. Every therapist is trained to do every therapy, so the person giving your relaxing massage also knows how to do the Indiba body treatment and the hydroenergetic massage, for example. Everything is customized: your meals, your schedule, and your treatments. The staff are easy to reach on WhatsApp if you’d rather not use the room phone, and they’re happy to handle last-minute schedule changes and even room transfers. Most of the staff remember you by name.

At times, though, the service feels a little rushed and standardized. That’s interesting, because so much of the stay is personalized, yet at times it still feels generic. With so many therapies and consultations packed into tight time slots, it’s hard for any one interaction to feel truly personal. It would be even better with a follow-up during or after the stay to see how you’re doing.

The setting: 7.5 out of 10

The hotel is designed to feel peaceful. It’s calm and clean, with a quiet beach, seating areas right out over the water, and several pools that are always quiet. Phone calls aren’t allowed indoors, which helps keep it that way, and occasionally there’s soft live music.

The weather was pleasant, around 80°F, though often cloudy or rainy during the day and occasionally stormy at night.

The dress code is relaxed: you can wear a bathrobe everywhere except dinner, and sandals are provided. For free time, there are water activities, hallways that double as an art gallery, and a small cinema showing gentle films like Minari, the story of a Korean American family starting a farm in rural Arkansas.

There’s also a great spa area, with a hot tub, a pool, loungers, a dry sauna, an infrared sauna, a steam room, and a cold room.

The gym is good too, with panoramic views over the mangroves and the ocean.

The flip side of all that calm is that it never feels lively. It isn’t a family resort or a romantic getaway, and many of the guests I saw were there on their own.

The hotel is also starting to show some wear. I counted four pools: one in front of the entrance, one outside the health center, one several floors above it, and one indoors. They’re all very quiet, but one of the outdoor pools looked like it could be better maintained, probably because hardly anyone uses it, with leaves in the water and the couches in disarray. Earthy, one of the restaurants, wasn’t really in service during my stay, and neither was one of the rooms next to the sauna and steam room. Some elevators and the men’s locker room had a moldy smell, even though everything looked clean, and there was some construction, so you could sometimes hear noise during the day.

The biggest downside: it’s not a vacation

This isn’t a traditional vacation. Your schedule gets packed: a massage, then the cell regeneration bed, then a hydrotherapy or energy treatment. The longest free block I usually had was about three hours, and the hotel isn’t really near anything. The closest attractions are the El Meco ruins, about a 10-minute walk away, and an upscale mall with shops and restaurants about 20 minutes away by car (I tried Myka Frozen Yogurt there and loved it). The treatments feel good and the setting is lovely, but you don’t get much time to yourself.

Tips if you go

  • Plan for very little free time. Treat it as a health program, not a beach holiday.
  • Book the cranio-cervical therapy and the hydroenergetic detox treatment.
  • Ask for a room away from the construction.
  • Pack a swimsuit. You’ll live in the provided robe and sandals during the day, but you’ll want it for the pools, spa, and water activities.
  • There’s no coffee, but they offer other caffeinated options if you need them.
  • Staying at the St. Regis next door? Ask about the 10% discount for St. Regis guests.
  • Skip the extra add-on packages. The standard Stay Your Way program covers plenty.

What it cost

My total came to 158,433.26 Mexican pesos, including all taxes and add-ons. That’s about $8,700 USD at today’s exchange rate, or roughly $1,745 a night. Here’s what went into it:

  • Room (Oceanfront Deluxe): $628.72 a night
  • Stay Your Way 4 Days program: $2,680, plus a $670 daily extension for my fifth day
  • Sleep Well Pack: $1,450, plus a $275 required add-on
  • A 5% hotel tax, a 15% resort fee, and a few extras

All meals and airport transfers are included.

Every guest has to book a program, and the programs and therapies are for SHA guests only. Stay Your Way is the standard customizable package, and there are other packages and add-ons too.

Value: 7 out of 10

It’s expensive. Honestly, most of health is pretty simple: sleep well, eat well, and manage your emotions well. You don’t need a clinic to do that. I’d consider going back, but I’d try a few other wellness places first.

That said, I had very few real complaints. It’s a lovely, peaceful place, and I left feeling calmer, with a clearer idea of how I want to take care of myself going forward.

Who it’s for

SHA is really for people who want to improve their health and want time just for themselves. Everything is about you: the food is tailored, your days are tailored, and you have a whole team of specialists focused on you. If that’s what you want, it’s great. If you want to explore Cancún, have lazy beach days, bring the kids, or plan a romantic trip, book somewhere else.

I also stayed at the St. Regis Costa Mujeres right next door. Read my St. Regis review, and a side-by-side comparison of the two is on the way.
